Sanitation:

How the people of Bashir (disposal) colony are sustaining? This area is at the distance of 5 kms. from main city. This area also termed as disposal colony because the sewage water of whole Sahiwal city is passing for different utilizations through this colony like to irrigate crops and to expel into the outfall drain. In total 75 families are resided and due continuous stagnant water, 15 houses are collapsed and other community members accommodated them within their houses. 

Community shared that they are suffering with the conditions due to the following reasons.

Actually the resourceful people or investors are interested to vacate the land, with the intentions of business. Settlers are the evictees of the land where the government constructed a library, no doubt the government provided the land to these families but that is far from city without labour or job opportunities or neither connected by any mean of communication. So, the people occupied this land, no doubt it is unhealthy to live here but the community at least have opportunities of labour or jobs or connected with the city for other needs. When the present community 10 years ago settled here, no body will assume that the government will permit them to sustain here. Now, the government approved electricity connection for this colony. Now, many people diverted towards this land and interested in its ownership and try different means to stress these people to vacate the land.

Before settlement of this colony, Sewage water used to irrigate crops and excess flow into the outfall drain. Land contractor stopped to irrigate the land with is water and also outfall drain no more existed. Now, the local administration finds the way to expel the sewage water by constructing mud channel, passing along the Bashir colony to flow sewage water out of city.. Sewage water is flowing with great pressure and mud channel is unable to accommodate it and it is continuously flooding Bashir colony and responsible for following problems.

• Seepage and water logging of buildings and under ground water
• Damaging and collapsing of buildings.
• Stagnant water is responsible for flies, mosquitoes etc responsible for diseases to great role for the poverty of residents.
• Effecting their social relations.
• Some of the families left the place and went to villages, where their children are without education, health and other needs.

Community of Bashir colony approached for many times to the concerned department to solve the problem but they satisfy them and they returned with the hope of improvement but now the community came to know that their intention is not improvement but to kick off us from this land as they negotiated with rich people for other purposes.

Community’s need and demand

Selected community members approached to the AIM Centre Sahiwal and discussed their problem and field visit was also organized to know the realities on the ground. On the ground it is analyzed that the community is in great problem, two small children of 8 and 10 years fell into the stagnant water but with the emergency action they saved to drown.

Community identified the need to construct bricked covered channel to pass sewage water from collection disposal to delivery disposal without harming them and community members also requested to reconstruct some of the houses who are completely damaged and collapsed.
